Dubrovnik history

Dubrovnik today is the city of many hotels and venues but many nations and naval forces like Saracens, Normans, Croats, Byzantines, Venice, big and small kingdoms and even the Ottomans and Napoleon have been meeting and fighting in the Dubrovnik area throughout the history.

On that position small town like Dubrovnik managed to get full unique form of autonomy through its political skill. For centuries Republic of Ragusa stayed independent and neutral making a living by fishing and trading.

People of Dubrovnik traded with many nations, but were never afraid of fighting for their freedom and their families and homes. Thats why they managed to stay the way they did for so many rough years.

"Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro" - "Freedom is not sold for all the worlds treasures", are the words that have been carved in stone over the door to never conquered Lovrijenac castle ever since the days of Republic of Ragusa.
